Cremation pollution slur totally unfounded

The cremation of bodies after death has been a part of human culture for untold thousands of years and in the UK the modern human cremation process could be said to have its origins in 1885 when Britain’s first official cremation took place in Woking.  Occasionally, over recent years, new and what are claimed to be innovative body disposal solutions have been suggested and recently a number of national newspapers carried articles describing the process of cryomation in which bodies are deep frozen before being pulverised into powder.  A major benefit of cryomation, so the articles claimed, was that it avoided the release of harmful emissions and pollutants associated with the human cremation process. Quite frankly that claim is utterly inaccurate! As one of the world’s leading human cremation technology specialists we can categorically confirm that our Novus ™ human cremation systems are among one of the most rigorously regulated...

Bacteria that Causes Legionnaires' Disease Frequently Found in Cooling Towers

Zimmetry Environmental provides testing and monitoring services across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to identify environmental pathogens. Bayamon, Puerto Rico, January 29th, 2018 -- Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the results of a study on the prevalence of Legionella bacteria in cooling towers across the country. According to media reports, CDC researchers found that 84% of the 196 cooling towers tested for Legionella DNA came back positive and viable Legionella was confirmed in approximately 40% of the cooling towers.   This is a serious concern because anytime people inhale water droplets that contain viable Legionella they could be at risk of developing Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever. This is especially true if they have a weakened or suppressed immune system.   These alarming figures underlie why it is so important to test certain water sources, including cooling towers, which could harbor and aerosolize the...

Colsen maximizes energy revenue of WTTP Den Bosch (NL)

Img 0973
January 22nd, 2018 -- The demands for modern WWTP's to operate more sustainable are becoming increasingly stringent. This applies in to many of the WWTP in The Netherlands and also to the Treurenburg location in Den Bosch (NL), which is owned by Water Council Aa and Maas. In order to achieve the desired performance, specific technologies must be applied. Colsen owns a broad range of technologies which have been applied to the sludge line at the WWTP in Den Bosch to be able to more efficiently process the sludge stream and to maximize energy output in the form of biogas. Below the various technologies are further described. Thermophilic Digestion   One of the technologies is thermophilic digestion, which comprises an efficient method for the digestion of organic residues in waste streams. The bacterial sludge decomposition normally occurs at mesophilic temperatures (between 35 and 38°C). In the Den Bosch case the...

UNTHA deal signifies shredding expansion in Japan

Kuchl -- UNTHA’s expansion in Asia looks set to continue, following the agreement of a new distribution partnership with Yokohama-headquartered engineering firm Sun Earth. The deal will see UNTHA’s Austrian manufactured shredding technology supplied to a number of sophisticated waste and alternative fuel production facilities throughout Japan. Sun Earth is no stranger to the shredding sector – in fact the $40m turnover company is the leading technology provider in the country’s waste management industry. But a growing number of requests for a shredding system that can tackle complex production waste, pulper ropes as well as single-step Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) manufacturing, represented a gap in Sun Earth’s machinery portfolio. Talks with UNTHA therefore began in the spring of 2017. “We want to offer our customers the most advanced waste technologies in the world,” commented Yutaka Ebihara, Sun Earth CEO. “We are constantly on the lookout for innovative yet proven equipment...

Reducing air pollution from coal power plants in the Western Balkans would save thousands of lives annually

Swift and significant emission cuts by Europe’s top polluters under new rules would boost health and reduce healthcare costs. Brussels -- Tomorrow, ministers at the 15th ministerial council meeting of the Energy Community in Kosovo will adopt new rules for emission limits for coal power plants in the Western Balkans (as part of the transposition of the EU’s Industrial Emissions Directive into national law). The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) calls on political leaders to put the countries on track for swift and significant reductions of harmful air pollutants, ahead of the 2028 full implementation deadline. HEAL’s new briefing (1) explains why doing so would bring huge benefits for health and dramatically reduce health costs both in the Western Balkans and the EU. 'Implementing the stricter EU rules on air pollution from coal power plants is a big challenge for the Western Balkan countries – but it is an even...

TECO Peoples Gas Launches Innovative New Waste-to-Energy Service

image
December 13, 2017 -- TECO Peoples Gas is expanding the green energy solutions for its customers with an innovative new renewable natural gas service. Natural gas comes from underneath the ground, typically through the mining of fossil fuels. By contrast, renewable natural gas (RNG) comes from organic waste – such as gases generated by landfills or water treatment plants, sometimes called biogas. Special equipment cleans or conditions the biogas to produce RNG, which can then be injected into Peoples Gas' pipeline – and used just like traditional natural gas. This allows certain customers, such as landfills, to create a useful product from something they currently dispose of. 'We are excited to be the first utility in Florida – and among the first in the country – to offer this innovative new service,' said T.J. Szelistowski, president of Peoples Gas. 'This is a win for the environment, a win for our...
